Network Activities B - complementarity

Aims

NA B aims to establish a network to optimise the co-ordination and improve user access to collections and expertise at a European level. This NA will maximise the limited resources and avoid duplication of effort at a national level. It will result in co-ordination of collection development where the acquisition of new materialswill be focused on agreed areas of strength; co-ordination of human resources with respect to recruitment policies to cover required expertise on different taxonomic groups on the European, regional and national scale; and an overview of the taxonomic literature in Europe.

Objectives

•  Description of the relative strengths in collections, facilities & expertise of partner institutions

•  Description of taxonomic knowledge-activity and dissemination within Partner institutions

•  Assessment of current policies and planning

•  Agreement on taxonomic institution development

Progress

Data formats and protocols for gathering data have been drawn up and it has been decided that existing data on strengths in collections, facilities and expertise will be gathered using BioCASE metadata. The data collection protocol was redefined to take into account data already in Fauna Europea. This will ultimately lead to the production of a Report which describes the relative infrastructure strengths, and an analysis of complementarity and gaps.

Naturalis (Leiden) took on the leadership of NA B has subcontracted ETI to create software to capture complemtarity data from European institutions. Results are now being collated and analysis will be done in the final year of the project..

The Taxonomic Data Conformity Index (TDCI) has been completed and is available in five languages at http://rameau.snv.jussieu.fr/cgi-bin/TDCI/tdcisite.pl

Deliverables :

The table format for gathering data has been agreed; data fields have been defined and the necessary level of detail needed for each data on collection and expertise strengths for respectively the botanical, zoological and microorganism's area.
